Fimo Koi Fish tutorial + tips by Nko-ennekappao Fimo Koi Fish tutorial + tips by Nko-ennekappao
[edit] I have a correction to make: as they told me this is not a koi but a fantail fish! Sorry for the mistake! :fish:

As promised here there is my first tutotial! I took those step by step pictures in August on request for the Colombian pubblication "en Familia" and I decided to publish them here on DA, expecially for share some tips with other polymer clay artists.
The pubblication asked me to make an animal and I chose a fish taking inspiration from my goldfish Quattro.
I will update it if something else comes to my mind. If you use the tutorial I'd be really happy if you show me the result! :)

Note: pay attention while working with kinifes or pointed objects, if you're a child ask an adult to help you.

[edit 2] Suggested by ~TheDemonSurfer
I forgot to tell that as dark colors as red blue (but also yellow) have a tendancy to stain lighter clay (as white or pale skin color) you should work first with white then touch darker colors. When that's not possible you should change your gloves or wash them (water and soap aren't enough, frequently you have to brush the gloves).

A nice, clearly written tutorial for a really happy looking "fish". I enjoyed reading it and will probably try something out for myself very soon. Thank you.

That's sooo awesome! I recently bought a piece of white fimo and I plan to use it soon. Your tutorial've been really helpful. I still have a few questions though. How long should I bake it (I didn't find any useful information on the wrap)? What kind of paint should I use on fimo? And is there something like a
lacquer to make it nice and shiny?
Sorry to bother you with all these questions.

No problem! ^^ Baking time depends on your owen and on how big is the figure, I'd suggest to make some attempts and frequently check if it's getting burned (you see it on white as it becomes pink). I usually bake things 15 or 20 minutes. You can use acrylic paint and if you want it shiny you can use this gloss: [link]

Does the temperature matter? My oven is quite old and doesn't show the temperature. I'm planing to make some snowflakes so I guess I'll have them baked for about 15 minutes, right?

Very nice tutorial. Clean, crisp, good photos and methods!
One thing that could be interesting is to take PearlEx pearl powder (or shimmer eyeshadow) and give it a little bit of glimmer! Possibly some color variation on the scales.

hmmm, I should were gloves to :P Thanks for the tip! (Especially if I use black and white in the same work like this [link] the bottom of the dress isn't white anymore :P)
Do you wash the gloves when you used black or do you take them off?

Actually I'm using black cernit clay that doesn't stain but when I use fimo blue or red (but also yellow stains a lot!) I wash and scrub gloves or I change them if the color doesn't go away, but most of time, when possible, I try to mold white and flesh colors before touching everything else! XD

You should probably note that working with colored clays, especially vibrant colors like red, have a tendency to stain the white clay. I can see some red smudges on your fish's side and top where you touched it after handing the red clay.

Otherwise, this is an adorable tutorial, and I've got to try it sometime!
